On April 1, 2008 (no joke), PetroSun announced it will begin operation of its commercial algae-to-biofuels facility in Rio Hondo, Texas. This facility will produce algal oil, renewable JP8 jet-fuel, and biomass that can be fermented into ethanol.

The advantage of algae biofuel is that it can produce 30 to 100 times as much oil per acre as soybean. According to the US Department of Energy, algae biofuel can replace all the petroleum fuel used in the United States by utilizing only 15,000 square miles (40,000 square kilometers) of land area, which is 1/7th the area of corn harvested.
